Endangered bird distributions

This project aims to systematically document the past and present distribution of the two endangered birds, the White-bellied heron Ardea insignis and the White-winged duck Asarcornis scutulata in the Brahmaputra river basin, India. 

White-bellied Heron is a Critically Endangered bird currently known only from Namdapha Tiger Reserve in Arunachal Pradesh in north-east India
We hope that our surveys in Arunachal Pradesh help find other sites where this bird continues to persist
White-winged Duck is an Endangered bird species found in forested pools in NE India. Hunting and habitat loss have resulted in drastic declines in populations of this species in NE India. Photo by: Garima Bhatia

Field surveys for the heron & duck

We are conducting systematic field and questionnaire surveys across different tributaries of River Brahmaputra including Noa Dehing, Lohit, Dibang, Siang, Subansiri and Kameng to determine presence of the two species in the landscape

We are conducting field surveys for these birds across different Protected and Non-protected area sites in Arunachal Pradesh
