Position and responsibilities:
We invite applications for the position of Project Manager for Bird LTEO (Long-Term Ecological Observatories) Project on biodiversity and climate change. While this is a multi-year project, we will offer an initial one-year contract to the successful applicant. The contract will be renewed based on the outcome of a review at the end of the initial year.
In brief the successful candidate will oversee and manage the Bird project of the Indian LTEO programme, liaise with the co-PIs across multiple institutions, supervise junior researchers and other staff, and assist in data analysis and report and manuscript writing.
This position demands that the candidate be highly self-motivated, independent and enterprising, and will fulfil the following responsibilities of this position:
Oversee the overall implementation of the project
Help standardize field methods for long-term bird bird monitoring in consultation with other investigators on the Bird LTEO project
Oversee the setup of permanent plots across environmental gradients in six LTEO landscapes across the country.
Assist with data management, analysis, and writing up of results for reports and manuscripts.
Help train other team members on standard field methods and protocols
Help organize periodic workshops and meetings
Help meet reporting requirements - finances, and other details from various collaborators to create consolidated reports as required
Location: The position will be based at the Nature Conservation Foundation in Bangalore, but will involve travel to specific field sites across India, which are part of the LTEO project
Candidates must possess the following basic qualifications/skills:
A Ph.D. degree, with the thesis preferably involving birds, or in other ecological sciences. In addition, exceptional applicants with an M.Sc. degree and four or more years experience in avian ecology may be considered.
Work experience demonstrating independent thinking and capacity in execution of science projects relating to avian ecology
Excellent organisational and people skills
Ability to independently facilitate meetings
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
Quantitative skills including study design and statistical analysis in R (preferably) or other tools
Candidates with the following additional qualifications/skills will be preferred, all else being equal:
Experience with handling large databases
Experience with mark-recapture methods
Experience with occupancy methods
Experience with line-transect and point count methods
Experience in Remote Sensing/GIS
Experience with field work at multiple sites

Remuneration: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and work experience according to Government of India scales — eg between Rs 55,000 to 65,000 per month, all inclusive, for candidates with a PhD.

About LTEO
The Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change has launched the Long-Term Ecological Observatories (LTEO) Programme, a multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary, all-India coordinated project. The LTEO programme will monitor a range of themes and taxa across the Indian subcontinent including soil, forests, grasslands, invertebrates, fish, herpetofauna, birds, animal movement and marine ecosystems. This long-term monitoring will be carried out across 6 index landscapes representing different biomes including the Northwestern Arid Zone, Western Himalaya, Eastern Himalaya, Central India, Western Ghats and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The collaborating organisations on the Bird Project within the larger LTEO programme are Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Tirupati, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune, Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF), Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON) and Wildlife Institute of India (WII); with NCF playing the role of the co-ordinating institution.
