M K Ibrahim
Field Coordinator, Oceans and Coasts
M. K. Ibrahim, better known as Ummini, coordinates the Oceans and Coasts field programme. He has worked with NCF since 1998, helping Rohan Arthur with his doctoral thesis. Ummini is an expert diver and is certified as an dive instructor. Together with his boat handling skills and his mechanical expertise, he is the kind of field Renaissance man that any programme can only dream of having. He knows the reefs of the Lakshadweep better than most and has developed a keen eye for ecological patterns, species behaviours and long-term trends. He also has a genuine love for the islands he calls his home and is dedicated to making sure that these reefs, lagoons and coasts are maintained healthy and thriving. He is a central pillar on which NCF's Lakshadweep programme is built and takes an active and equal part in all our field projects here. He also serves as a patient mentor both of the field staff in the Lakshadweep as well as every new researcher that joins the programme.
